Internet of Things (IoT) is the central tenet of smart buildings where devices collect and share data about themselves, their users, their environments, and the other devices with which they connect. This data provides insights allowing businesses to maximize energy savings, optimize space and improve employee wellbeing and productivity.
What is the role of lighting in a smart building?
The digital nature of LED technology brings illumination and IT together, allowing lighting systems to participate in the Internet of Things. Philips connected lighting systems uses Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology into the IoT – an ideal way to support efficiencies across a smart building according to the 3-30-300 Principle.
How connected lighting works?
Low voltage power is transmitted over existing Ethernet cables to operate the luminaires, while high volumes of data are sent and collected. Integrating a Philips connected lighting system using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology into the IoT is an ideal way to meet sustainability goals and realize financing savings from space optimization and employee productivity.
System Components
>> Smart Engine The smart engine takes care of the energy supply to the lamps with Power-over-Ethernet Plus. It uses suitable, standard data lines, as are also used for the IT infrastructure
>>Sensors close to the lamps measure the environmental parameters. Presence detectors identify whether persons are present in the room. Often a brightness and a temperature sensor are also integrated in the detector housing.
>> The Smart Lighting Controller represents the link between the LED lamp and the IP network and manages the data traffic between the network and sensors/lamps.
>> Network switches have long since developed from purely forwarding data packets to become intelligent control centers in networks.
>> The Smart Director app (Application), for example, takes the entries from the user's smartphone or tablet and forwards the corresponding control commands to the particular smart lighting controller of the lamps. Configuration and management of the lamps takes place without any complex, expensive software package.
